Treasure Tests (Matthew 6:33 Meaning)

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33

Simple words. Revolutionary meaning.

The meaning of Matthew 6:33 isn’t just about prioritizing God – it’s about discovering where your heart truly lives.

Jesus said something fascinating just before this: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Notice He didn’t say where your heart is, your treasure will be. It’s the opposite. Your treasure leads. Your heart follows.

Think about the rich young ruler. He wanted eternal life. But when Jesus told him to sell everything, he walked away sad. His treasure revealed his heart’s true home (Mark 10:22).

Here are a few simple exercises to find your true treasure:

The Money Test:

  • Check your last 3 months of spending
  • After necessities, where does most of your money go?
  • Did you tithe and give generously?
  • Or do you believe the lie that you can’t give until you make more money?

That’s what you truly value.

(Note: Remember that money isn’t evil, loving it is.)

The Time Test:

  • Look at your calendar from last week
  • Where did most of your free time go?
  • Did you prioritize daily time with God?

That’s what you’re truly pursuing.

The Worry Test:

  • What keeps you up at night?
  • What do you have the hardest time trusting God with?
  • What do you most often take into your own hands without God’s involvement?

That’s your treasure.

The Conversation Test:

  • What do you talk about most?
  • What excites you in conversation?
  • How often do you talk about the things of the Lord?

That’s what your heart values.

The meaning of Matthew 6:33 becomes clear: when we seek God’s kingdom first, everything else finds its proper place.

But what does “seeking first” look like?

  • It’s tithing before shopping
  • It’s serving others before serving ourselves
  • It’s asking “What would Jesus do?” before “What do I want?”
  • It’s choosing time with God before social media

Here’s the promise: When God’s kingdom becomes your treasure, your heart finds its true home.

And everything else? Jesus says it will be added unto you.

Not because you earned it. But because your Father knows exactly what you need.

Today, what do your “tests” reveal about your treasure? Where might God be calling you to realign your heart?
