Untouchable

A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
Mark 1:40–42 NIV

In today’s verses, we encounter a powerful moment that reveals much about Jesus and his ministry. Let me highlight the historical context and draw out the significance of this passage.

The Historical Context

In ancient Jewish society, leprosy was devastating beyond just the physical disease. According to Mosaic Law (specifically in Leviticus 13-14), those with leprosy were considered ritually unclean. This meant they were:

  • Forced to live outside the community
  • Required to shout “Unclean! Unclean!” to warn others
  • Unable to participate in normal religious and social life
  • Forbidden from physical contact with others

This isolation was complete and crushing. No touch, no community, no belonging.

The Encounter

When this man approaches Jesus, he does something remarkable — he kneels before Jesus and says, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” His statement shows both faith in Jesus’ power and uncertainty about Jesus’ willingness.

Jesus responds with compassion. The text says Jesus not only healed him but first touched him. The Greek word used here can indicate an embrace. This would have been extraordinary — possibly the first human touch this man had experienced in years.

The Meaning For Us Today

Just like the leper, many of us feel “untouchable” because of things we’ve done wrong or failures in our lives. We might feel that God is powerful enough to help us but wonder if He is willing.

Jesus’ response is clear: “I am willing.” His touch came before the healing, showing that God’s love reaches us in our “unclean” state. We don’t have to clean ourselves up first.

The physical healing was miraculous, but the touch itself was revolutionary. It restored not just health but human dignity and connection.

No matter how isolated or unworthy you feel, Jesus is willing to touch your life. His embrace doesn’t make Him unclean — it makes you clean. There is no sin or shame too great for His healing touch.
