Romans Road: The Wages of Sin (Romans 6:23)

Have you ever gotten your first real paycheck? There’s something sobering about seeing your earnings—knowing you worked for it, earned it, and now it’s yours. The Greek word for “wages” here is ὀψώνια (opsōnia), which literally meant a soldier’s pay or rations. It’s what you’ve got coming to you.

Here’s the deal: when it comes to sin, we’ve all been working hard at it since day one. And just like that paycheck, we’ve earned something: death. The word used here for death (θάνατος – thanatos) means more than just stopping breathing. It’s about complete separation from God, the source of all life.

Think of it like this: Imagine you’ve got a plant. You can do everything wrong—forget to water it, keep it in the dark, even spray it with harmful chemicals. You’ve “earned” its death. But you can’t do anything to earn its life. Life can only be given. That’s exactly what God does through Jesus.

Notice the contrast: wages vs. gift (χάρισμα – charisma). One is earned, the other freely given. One comes from our work, the other from God’s grace. One leads to death, the other to eternal life.

And here’s the reality… This gift isn’t a participation trophy. It’s not given to everyone automatically. It comes “in Christ Jesus our Lord.” That’s the game-changer. That’s where death gets swallowed up by life.
