Romans Road: God’s Radical Love (Romans 5:8)

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Imagine this…

You’re walking down the street and see someone spray painting graffiti all over your brand-new car. But instead of calling the police, you walk up and hand them the keys, saying “It’s yours now—and here’s the title too.”

Sounds crazy, right? Yet that’s not even close to the radical nature of God’s love for us.

The Greek word for “demonstrates” (synistēsin) means to show, prove, or establish. In today’s verse, God isn’t just talking about His love, He’s proving it in the most dramatic way possible. And check this out: it’s in the present tense. God didn’t only prove His love once at the cross; He’s actively demonstrating it right now.

Think of it like this: Imagine you’re drowning and someone comes to rescue you. But, rather than just struggling against the waves, you’re actively pushing away the person trying to help you. That’s us in our sin. Yet Jesus jumps in anyway, knowing you’ll fight Him, knowing it would cost Him His life. That’s exactly what happened. While we were still throwing punches at God, Jesus died for us.

The phrase “while we were still sinners” is crucial here. The word “still” emphasizes the timing. God didn’t wait for us to clean up our act. He didn’t hold out until we showed some potential. He loved us at our worst, our most unlovable, our most hostile.

And “Christ died” carries the weight of history’s most profound act of love. The sinless One died for the sinful. The Creator died for His creation. The Life-giver died to give us life.

When was the last time you really sat with this truth, that God loved you enough to die for you while you were still His enemy? Thank Him for His grace, today.
