Psalm 51:10 – Owning Our Sinful Actions

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
(Psalm 51:10 ESV)

One of the biggest challenges I have faced as a woman, wife and mom is this: owning my actions and teaching my kids to own theirs. We as humans have so much pride that we find it difficult to apologize and take responsibility for our actions. This passage starts out with the psalmist owning his sinful actions.

The Message phrases verse three this way: “I know how bad I’ve been; my sins are staring me down.” There were times in my life where my sins had to stare me down before I made the necessary changes. I am thankful that as I have grown in my walk with the Lord, it doesn’t happen much anymore and I am able to model this for my children. I am so thankful for a merciful and gracious God who will teach, teach and then teach some more until we get it right. What a great model for us to follow with our children.

Oh, God, how beautiful the thought, how merciful the blest decree, that grace can always be found when sought, and nought shut out the soul from thee. – Eliza Cook
