Planning for Victory

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires.”
Romans 13:14

Have you ever noticed how our biggest spiritual defeats rarely come out of nowhere?

The Greek word Paul uses here for “provision” – pronoia – gives us a fascinating insight. It literally means “forethought” or “thinking ahead.” By using this word, Paul reveals a profound truth about our struggle with sin: Most of our failures aren’t spontaneous. They’re the result of small decisions we made long before the moment of temptation.

Think about it. Before a moment of gossip, we’ve usually already decided to spend time with people who tear others down. Before falling into sexual sin, we’ve already allowed ourselves to nurture inappropriate thoughts or stay in compromising situations.

Paul’s command here is both challenging and practical. When he tells us to “make no provision for the flesh,” he’s not just saying “don’t sin.”

He’s telling us to look upstream—to examine the patterns, habits, and choices that lay the groundwork for sin in our lives.

What mental preparations are we making? What situations are we failing to avoid? What boundaries have we left undefined?

But notice that this verse doesn’t begin with what we should avoid. It starts with what we should pursue: “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

The best defense against sin isn’t just running from temptation—it’s running toward Jesus. When we clothe ourselves in Christ’s character, when we fill our minds with His Word, when we strengthen ourselves through prayer and fellowship, we’re making provision for righteousness instead of sin.
