Ministering to God

“David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister there regularly, according to each day’s requirements.”
1 Chronicles 16:37 NIV

When we think about worship, we often focus on what we receive—comfort, peace, renewal. And while God absolutely meets us in worship, we easily forget the most important audience in the room: God Himself.

In 1 Chronicles 16:37, we find a powerful image of worship that flips our usual assumptions. David appointed Asaph and others to minister before the ark of the covenant. The Hebrew word for “minister” here is sharat, a word used throughout the Old Testament to describe sacred service in the presence of God. This wasn’t entertainment. It wasn’t background music. It was ministry to the Lord.

Their worship wasn’t random or reactive. It was daily, intentional, and carried out “according to each day’s requirements.” They showed up, not to perform for people, but to attend to God’s presence with reverence, praise, and thanksgiving.

Their audience was the Lord!

This challenges how we see worship in both our private lives and church gatherings. Worship isn’t just the “warm-up” before the sermon. It’s not about what songs we like or how we feel. Worship is ministry to God. It’s our priestly offering. It’s what we were made for.

Every time you sing, pray, or speak His name with awe, you’re ministering before the throne. Whether in your living room or your local church, you’re stepping into a holy task.

You are attending to God with honor and offering Him what He alone deserves.

So what if we started to ask:

• Did I minister to God today?
• Was He pleased with the offering of my lips and the posture of my heart?

When that becomes our aim, worship moves from routine to rhythm. And just like Asaph, we’ll find joy and purpose not just in being filled, but in blessing the One who is always worthy.
