Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10 ESV)
Waking up every morning with a roof over your head, food in the fridge, and a job to go to can make it easy to repeat the words Jesus said in Matthew 6:10. Life is comfortable for us. Yeah, of course this is God’s will for our lives. BUT, how would you react if your nice, neatly packaged life, were shaken up:
- What if you and your family encounter unexpected chaos?
- What if Jesus’ path includes unexpected turns for you?
- What if following Jesus really costs you a comfortable life in your community?
- What if God asks for a far greater sacrifice than you had anticipated?
These can be hard questions to think about as we grab our $5 cup of coffee from Startbucks (I am speaking to myself also here).
Some of us can read these questions and think, “Amen, that is right!”; while still believing these questions have nothing to do with us personally. We might feel that we have already paid our dues in life or that the radical, “follow-me” statements, are meant for single Christians without kids. Or maybe, God has blessed you with so much, you are letting his very blessing be a barrier to following his will right now.
No matter where you are in life, Jesus has called all of his followers to take up their cross and follow him (Acts 17:11). God’s will can look different in our individual lives, but the call to embrace it is the same each of us.
How will you respond when God’s will is different than your will?
