Matthew 4:4 – When Hunger Teaches U

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4 ESV)

In Matthew 4, Jesus faces Satan in the wilderness. After forty days without food, Jesus was hungry. Yet he teaches us something vital: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word from God.”

When we fast, we choose to be weak. Our bodies cry out for food, and we feel our need deeply. This hunger speaks a truth: our souls need God’s word even more than our bodies need bread.

This isn’t just an idea to think about. It’s a truth we feel in our empty stomachs.

Think about how much our bodies control us. We eat when hungry. We sleep when tired. These habits run our lives. But fasting breaks this pattern. We say “not yet” to our hunger, and this makes us aware of how much we depend on God.

Every hunger pang reminds us: we are not as strong as we think. Our normal routines hide this truth from us.

Fasting isn’t just about asking God for things. It’s about letting the Holy Spirit change us from within. When we feel weak and empty, we can finally see how much we need God all the time.

In these hungry moments, we join with the Psalmist who prayed: “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). Our emptiness makes room for what truly fills us.
