“I am the resurrection and the life”

Ever felt the sting of death? The crushing weight of loss?

Martha did. Her brother Lazarus had been dead four days. Then Jesus arrived.

“I am the resurrection and the life,” He declared in John 11:25. “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”

Notice He didn’t say, “I can cause resurrection” or “I will bring life.”

He said, “I AM.”

This isn’t just beautiful poetry. It’s earth-shattering truth.

Think about it. When you plug in a lamp, you’re not getting power from the lamp. You’re getting power through the lamp from the power plant.

But Jesus isn’t like that. He’s not a conduit for life and resurrection. He IS life and resurrection.

This changes everything.

When Martha faced her brother’s tomb, she believed in a future resurrection.

“I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day,” she said.

But Jesus was offering something more immediate. Something more personal.

He wasn’t just promising future life. He was declaring Himself as life itself. Right there. Right then.

And to prove it? He called Lazarus out of that tomb.

This means:

• Death isn’t final for believers
• Eternal life starts now, not just after death
• Our hope isn’t in an event, but in a Person
• Jesus’ power over death is present reality, not just future promise

Why does this matter today?
