The Bible Reads Us

Daily Devotional Bible Verses

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV)

We may think we read our Bibles, but if we’re honest, our Bibles read us.

For starters, God’s Word knows “the thoughts and intentions of the heart,” which is a bit frightening, for the “heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

In fact, the Bible is like a sword that pierces and penetrates us. It cuts through our calloused hearts and selfish minds, but it doesn’t do so to inflict pain, but to give life.

God’s Word is a fountain of life that’s always fresh and pure. At times it will wound us and convict us, but it will always heal. We will be better for the truth that it imparts.

When we approach Scripture, we should do so with the knowledge that it isn’t fooled by us, it understands our hearts even though we can’t.

There is no direction in life to which God has not spoken, and no position in which we can find ourselves that God does not understand. God gets us better than we do which means he can make us better than we can make ourselves.

We were created in his image to reflect his glory and beauty, and the Bible repair us into mirrors no longer broken so we can better reflect his image.

Remember that we don’t read the Bible, it reads us. Submit to its authority in your life.
