Psalm 51:10 – A Heart Of Worship

We’ve written about forms of idolatry in the past. It is the default position of our hearts. Today we’re exploring the true heart of worship in our devotional Bible verse:

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10 ESV)

What is so heinous about idols, though, is they aren’t only wooden statues or silver tokens.

They are simply anything we worship as a God-thing that isn’t God himself.

To uncover our idols (or our objects of impure worship) we must first understand what worship looks like.

Worship is simply this: ascribing supreme value or worth to something.

However, idols enter the picture when we fail to center our ever-worshipping hearts upon God.

Think about your idols.

What gives you the greatest pleasure? Is it food and drink, sex or wealth, comfort or appearance? It is inevitable that we will value each of those things, and others, to some degree. But the question is: what do I value most?

The answer to that question is found in the way you live. It’s not what you wish you valued most, it’s what you spend your life trying to obtain. What we most value is what our hearts will worship.

Take some time today to think about this. Think about it before you go to church on Sunday.

Think about it before you sit down to read your Bible and pray. Join David in his cry for God to, “Create in me a clean heart,” for right worship is our response to God that flows from a clean heart.

Answer this question honestly in your heart today: who or what are you worshipping?
