Dig Through the Roof

“Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.'”
Mark 2:3-5 NIV

This passage shows us what determined faith looks like in action. Four friends carried a paralyzed man to see Jesus, but found their path blocked by crowds. Instead of giving up, they took an extraordinary step: they climbed onto the roof, broke through it, and lowered their friend down to Jesus.

In first-century Palestine, most homes had flat roofs made of wooden beams covered with thatch and packed dirt. Creating an opening would have been disruptive. Just imagine dirt falling on the people below and the surprise of seeing a man being lowered through the ceiling! Yet these friends were so convinced Jesus could help that no obstacle would stop them.

Notice Jesus’ response. He wasn’t upset about the property damage or the interruption. Instead, “he saw their faith,” not just what they believed, but what their actions demonstrated. Their persistence revealed genuine belief that Jesus could help their friend.

What Jesus said next is significant. Before addressing the man’s obvious physical need, he said, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” This reveals Jesus’ priority: He addressed the man’s spiritual condition first, showing us that our relationship with God is our deepest need.

Not only that, but he also demonstrated his deity. He claimed to be God by forgiving this man’s sins. And to prove his claim, Jesus healed him.

This story challenges us to consider: How persistent is our faith? Do we give up when we face obstacles in bringing ourselves or others to Jesus? And are we willing to accept that Jesus might address deeper needs than the obvious ones we bring to him?

True faith, like these four friends showed, is creative, persistent, and willing to overcome barriers. And Jesus sees such faith… Not just as a private belief, but as action that demonstrates trust in who he is and what he can do.
