Thankfulness in Every Season

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

On Thanksgiving Day, giving thanks feels natural when life is good. But Paul doesn’t say “give thanks when everything is going well.” He says “give thanks in all circumstances.” That’s a very different command.

Notice Paul doesn’t say “give thanks for all circumstances.” You don’t have to be thankful for the cancer diagnosis or the broken relationship or the job loss. But you can give thanks in those circumstances. You can find God’s presence even in dark times. You can see His faithfulness even when life is hard.

Why does God want this for us?

Because gratitude changes us. Research found that people who practice gratitude have a 9% lower risk of dying over a three-year period. The study showed gratitude helps with sleep, reduces depression, and improves heart health. Gratitude is good for your body!

But more importantly, gratitude is good for your soul. When you practice thankfulness, you’re training your heart to see God’s work around you. You’re choosing to trust Him even when you don’t understand. You’re declaring that He is good, even when life is not.

This Thanksgiving, start with the easy things. Thank God for family, food, and a place to sleep. But then go deeper. Can you thank Him for being with you in your hardest season? Can you thank Him for His promise to never leave you? Can you thank Him that your story isn’t over yet?

Gratitude in all circumstances isn’t denial. It’s faith. It’s saying “God, I don’t like where I am, but I trust who You are.” And that kind of gratitude transforms everything.
