Be Killing Sin…

What if your doctor found cancer in your body? Would you shrug it off? Make peace with it? Of course not! You’d fight it with everything you have.

Yet too often, that’s exactly how we treat sin.

“Because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
Romans 8:13 (CSB)

The great Puritan John Owen put it bluntly: “Be killing sin, or it will be killing you.”

These words might sound harsh to our modern ears. We live in an age of “cheap grace” – treating God’s forgiveness like a blank check to keep sinning. We justify it. Minimize it. Make excuses for it.

But Paul confronted this head-on: “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (Romans 6:1-2)

Look around. Sin isn’t harmless:

  • It tears families apart
  • It breeds addiction
  • It fuels violence
  • It breaks marriages
  • It destroys lives

Every heartache, every war, every broken home traces back to sin. It’s not just “making mistakes.” It’s not just “being human.” Sin is spiritual cancer.

And like cancer, sin starts small. It seems harmless at first. “It’s not that bad,” we tell ourselves. “Everyone does it.” “I deserve this.”

But sin’s wages are death (Romans 6:23). Always.

The good news? God hasn’t left us powerless.

Through His Spirit, we can “put to death the deeds of the body.” We don’t fight alone.

Today, where are you making peace with sin? What “small” compromise is growing like a cancer in your life?
