Back to School Prayers

Children are a gift from the Lord;
They are a reward from him.
Psalm 127:3

It’s back-to-school time, and whether it’s your child’s first or final year, it’s not uncommon for them to feel anxious. Many unknowns await them—new teachers, possibly new friends, a new routine, a harder schedule, or maybe even a new school. It’s a perfect time to pray for your children.

Pray for their strength and courage. Our children will face all kinds of peer pressure throughout their school-aged years. Standing up to this pressure is incredibly hard. Pray that they will be strong enough to do what is right, no matter what.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

Pray for their protection. Whether it be bullying, an accident on the playground, or violence in school, our kids live in an increasingly dangerous world. Pray that the Lord will keep them safe and free from harm.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1–2

Pray for their wisdom and compassion. Whether it’s consoling a sad friend, befriending someone eating alone, or simply knowing when to remain silent, pray that the Lord will help them recognize and understand these moments for what they are.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

And pray for their joy. Every day is an opportunity for them to learn and grow, but that’s difficult to do if they routinely feel unhappy. Pray that God fills their hearts and minds with a joy only the Lord can provide. Pray that they might be a light to their friends, teachers, school staff, and bus drivers.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

This week, look for opportunities to discuss these ideas with your kids. Then continue to pray these things for them and your entire family.
