Proverbs 3:5 – Self-Sufficient Savior

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5 ESV)

Have you ever been burned by someone you trusted? Maybe it was a close friend you confided in only to discover he or she betrayed your trust. Or worse yet, maybe you trusted your employer, believing they would look upon your many years of service, hard work, and loyalty and keep an open position for you- but they didn’t, and you were laid off along with the rest. It’s so difficult to find people to trust in life because most of us simply look after our own bottom line. Essentially, people look to what is best for them in a given situation. But it has not been, nor ever will be so with our God. Continue Reading →

John 1:35-39 – What are you seeking?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. John 1:35-39 ESV

“What are you seeking?” are the first words of Jesus that John records and the big question that he asks of these two men who are interested in becoming his disciples. This question could also be translated, “what purpose do you have?” The same question applies to us today- what is our purpose in seeking to follow Jesus? Are you seeking a Jesus that is there to meet all of your wishes or to answer all of life’s questions for you? Continue Reading →

John 17:17 – Truth

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17 ESV)

Have you ever heard someone say, “That may be true for you, but not for me”? The idea that truth is relative to every individual and culture is nothing new. In fact, it’s been around a long time. In ancient Greece there was a group called the Stoics teaching exactly that. But what is interesting about the philosophy of relative truth is that there’s never been a person in history who could live by it!

Think about it: if someone walked in front of a moving bus there’s a good chance it would be the end of him, whether the individual believed in physics or not. The laws of gravity, thermodynamics and mathematics were true in ancient Greece just as they are today. A thing’s trueness or falsehood isn’t dependent on a person to believe in it, it exists in reality independent of that person’s belief. Continue Reading →

I Corinthians 10:13 – Everybody’s Feeling It

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)

Your temptation is not special. It never has been, and it never will be, and as Solomon so aptly commented, “there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). The moment we allow ourselves to believe that our temptation is unique and different from others’ is the moment we so often allow ourselves to indulge or give in to that particular sin. If it’s not like everyone else’s and somehow different we can rationalize a license to continue in defeat. But if we allow ourselves to be confronted with Paul’s words here we are forced to grapple with the fact that “no temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man”. Basically, the sin with which you are tempted, in bondage to, and struggling with has been faced ever since Eden, and Continue Reading →

Romans 5:8 – Messy Love

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 ESV)

Most of us can remember a time as children when our parents told us to clean up before dinner. We may have been having company over or simply too dirty from playing to sit at a clean table! But this idea that we need to be presentable gets engrained in us as we grow up, and continues to sink its roots deeper within us. Some high schoolers spend hours in the morning picking out the perfect outfits, applying make-up and straightening hair, or making sure their hats are tilted just like Justin Bieber’s.

We work so hard to present ourselves with a certain image, and it often becomes an obsession. Unfortunately, this doesn’t end in high school or even college. In fact, as we age it frequently gets worse. We move into buying homes, cars and jet skis that we can’t afford simply to impress our neighbors and ourselves.

Even though we may appear put together on the outside, many of our hearts are a mess. But God doesn’t Continue Reading →

Romans 1:11-12 – Encouraging Relationships

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. (Romans 1:11-12 ESV)

Paul earnestly desired to visit the church in Rome. There were probably multiple reasons, including: it was his calling/ministry, he wanted to teach them, wanted to see how they were doing, and many more. But, it was also so that he could receive from them. Paul was a man who wrote the majority of New Testament books and he wanted to be encouraged by new Christians in Rome. How awesome!

At times we also need the encouragement of other Christians. He was wanting to spend time with people, to develop relationships with people, and to then be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. These kind of relationships do not happen Continue Reading →
