Psalm 119:103 – God’s Words, Sweeter Than Honey

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalm 119:103 ESV)

Psalm 119 is of course the longest chapter found in Scripture and is known for it’s teaching on God’s law. This Psalm is not simply about what to do and not do, but about how God’s law leads us into a deeper devotion with him than the things of this world ever could. In Psalm 119:103 the words of God are said to be sweeter than honey. Honey was and is used today as a natural sweetener. God’s words or laws bring a sweetness to the life we live. Our tongues crave a sweet dessert or treat as our lives should crave the sweetness of God’s word if we are followers of Jesus (1 Peter 2:1-3). This desire does not come from good works or Continue Reading →

Mark 10:26-27 – Just Work Harder?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:26-27 ESV)

Best sellers in box offices and book stores are filled with stories that mirror this sentiment. We love stories about the victorious underdog, about the person who is told he or she can’t do something, then works harder than everyone else around him or her and accomplishes it. Movies and novels about events like these are often heartfelt, wonderful and uplifting. But what do they really tell us about ourselves? Continue Reading →

Romans 7:18 – New Year’s Promises

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.  For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.  (Romans 7:18) ESV

It’s the start of a new year and gyms all across America will see a spike in new memberships.  Why?  New Year’s resolutions.  Nearly every top ten list includes the following resolutions: getting in shape, losing weight, or quitting smoking.  Unfortunately, most of these resolutions don’t last.  Just wait until mid-February and you’ll have a much easier time finding a parking space at the gym.

We can to do the same thing as we follow Jesus.  We can make big promises about the great things we plan to do for Him.  We can try to impress Him with our performance.  In the process we can forget two important facts: Continue Reading →

2 Chronicles 12:1 – The Superman Complex

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. (2 Chronicles 12:1 ESV)

There are few things better than when life comes together. Your relationships are good, your job is going well, you’re faithfully reading your Bible and the sin you’ve struggled with seems distant. A season such as this could last for a long while, and you’d probably feel pretty good about yourself. Often, we feel so encouraged that even a bump in our spiritual road can’t get us down because we’re grounded in God’s Word. But, we know this will not last forever. Eventually we decline. We read our Bible less, we fall again to the same sin and the small bumps in the road turn into massive potholes. Why? Continue Reading →

Psalm 23:3 – God Does It For His Name

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. (Psalm 23:3 ESV)

Why does God lead us and take care of us? We can probably list a number of reasons. A popular one may be, “Because of his love.” We know that God is love (1 John 4:8) and that we as Christians are to love above all (1 Peter 4:8). While these are true about God and love, they aren’t the only reason he takes care of and directs his people. Scripture teaches here that he does it “for his name’s sake”. This isn’t an isolated verse or reason for God doing what he does throughout Scripture. We read in Ezekiel 20:14 that he took care of the Israelites in order that the foreign nations wouldn’t profane his name and the list of verses could go on. This can be hard to grasp. Nehemiah 2:17 – Sins Cause Callousness

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” Nehemiah 2:17 ESV

Jerusalem had been destroyed and lying in ruins for over 125 years. The people Nehemiah was talking to here had been living in the rubble heap that was Jerusalem for ten years or more. Why then, was it necessary for him to tell them to look at the “ruins” and start building the wall? It was because the Israelites that were living there had become callous to their surroundings. Day after day they became numb to walking over rubble and not having gates to protect them. Eventually, this literally broken city became comfortable and home to them.

Unfortunately, this same destruction can become comfortable in our lives today. Continue Reading →
