Joshua 6:16 – God’s Glory, Our Good

Daily Devotions Bible Verse

And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city. ( Joshua 6:16 ESV)

We have all heard the story of Joshua fighting the Battle of Jericho.  If you grew up in the church, you might have even learned a song about it.  It is a popular story that many are familiar with, but there is much to learn about the way God worked in this narrative.

Joshua was leading the Israelites into the promised land and it came time to take their first city.  They arrived at Jericho only to face an extremely well fortified city.  It didn’t look good for the Israelites. God then told Joshua to march around the city for six days and blow horns, and in doing so, they would win Jericho (Joshua 6:1-6).  This sounds crazy, but it wasn’t, because Continue Reading →

Genesis 48:15 -The God Story Family Tradition

Daily Devotion Bible Verse

And he blessed Joseph and said,

“The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
(Genesis 48:15 ESV)

As literacy increases in our cultures and instant access to information on the web is so readily available, the need to pass down history through verbal forms or storytelling is gradually dying if not already dead in your part of the world. This was not the case in the Old Testament. As Jacob was blessing his son Joseph, he reminded him of his family history and how God was so important in it. We also see that God introduces himself to Jacob as this in Genesis 28:13 and again to Moses in Exodus 3:6. There is obviously something important about knowing your roots in God if this is how he introduces himself and we read throughout the Old Testament the Israelites constantly refer to God this way. Does God really want us to refer to him this way? Continue Reading →

Psalm 119:24 – Ancient Counselors

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Your testimonies are my delight;
they are my counselors. (Psalm 119:24 ESV)

The Bible isn’t simply a thick rule book God threw down from atop Mount Sinai. Rather, it’s a collection of testimonies, or the story of God coming through for his people. Though Scripture does contain lists like the Ten Commandments and books like Leviticus, it is primarily comprised of the stories of God’s people. In short, the Bible is a book about God written by him through people. The very way that he chose to reveal himself to us displays that he wants to be in relationship with us. And, like the Psalmist, those testimonies should be our delight!

We should delight in them because: Continue Reading →

Exodus 16:3 – Don’t Get Too Comfortable

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
(Exodus 16:3 ESV)

God has done a lot of crazy/awesome things for the Israelites. The 10 plagues have happened, God parted the Red Sea, saved them from the Egyptians, and now they want to go back because their tummies are hungry. Their hunger makes them forget what God had done. They had gotten comfortable having food in their stomach even if it meant being in slavery.  We can read this and say we would never act like this toward God if he showed us all of these miracles and rescued us.  What we must remember though, is that God has rescued us from sin and his wrath to come.

Everything we have: our car, our family, our money, and our house are from him also.  So, what is the comfort in your life that you can’t live without?   What would happen Continue Reading →

Proverbs 3:5 – Self-Sufficient Savior

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5 ESV)

Have you ever been burned by someone you trusted? Maybe it was a close friend you confided in only to discover he or she betrayed your trust. Or worse yet, maybe you trusted your employer, believing they would look upon your many years of service, hard work, and loyalty and keep an open position for you- but they didn’t, and you were laid off along with the rest. It’s so difficult to find people to trust in life because most of us simply look after our own bottom line. Essentially, people look to what is best for them in a given situation. But it has not been, nor ever will be so with our God. Continue Reading →

Genesis 39:5 – The Joseph Effect

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in house and field. Genesis 39:5 ESV

We have all been in a job we hated. Maybe you wake every morning with a strong feeling of dread as your alarm goes off, waking you for your “wonderful” job. Joseph in the Bible can be a great example for those of us who live that way every day. His brothers were jealous of him and decided to kill him, but then changed their minds and sold him into slavery (much better). As we read Joseph’s story we find that God had placed him in places and situations for a purpose; even if that purpose was not immediately clear. But in the end, Joseph was the King of Egypt’s right hand man! He even saved the lives of his family that had once tried to kill him.

While God may providentially place us in a certain vocation or situation, it still doesn’t make us enjoy our lot any more. So, another lesson Joseph teaches us is that Continue Reading →
