Psalm 119:44-45 – True Freedom

Bible Verse of the Day

I will keep your law continually,
forever and ever,
and I shall walk in a wide place,
for I have sought your precepts.
Psalm 119:44-45 ESV

God’s laws, rules, and Jesus’ teachings can appear as a type of straight jacket to those who are not followers of Jesus. These rules may even seem to inhibit a person from being themselves, having fun, or living life to its fullest. The author of the famous Psalm 119 has a different view on this notion, however. The author wrote that keeping God’s law (doing what the Bible and Jesus said) will allow us to walk in wide places. Other translations use liberty or even freedom. This can seem contradictory, but, as one looks at what the Bible lays out for our lives, we see that it helps us to live a life that is free from the wages of sin. Continue Reading →

Genesis 11:4 – Our Name or God’s Fame?

Bible Verse of the Day

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
(Genesis 11:4 ESV)

If we looked at the people of Babel outside of what the Bible tells us, we might say they were a great example of what can be done when we come together and work as a team.  They were creating a huge tower in order stay unified and become a powerful community.  But, to God, this was not good.  If they were able to use their teamwork and build this tower, nothing would have been impossible for them (Genesis 11:6).  Why would God have had a problem with this? Leviticus 17:11 – Life Blood

Bible Verse of the Day:

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. Leviticus 17:11 ESV

Blood is almost always indicative that something went wrong. People everywhere, of almost every age, understand that blood on the outside of a person means something bad has happened. Continue Reading →

Romans 8:29 – The Morality Trap

Bible Verse of the Day

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
(Romans 8:29 ESV)

Remember, if you will, the recounting of Jesus at the pool of Bethesda in John 5. He was among throngs of the sick, blind, and lame crowding around that pool during a Jewish holiday hoping for healing. When Jesus found a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years he told him, “Get up, take your bed, and walk. And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked” (John 5:8-9). This miracle happened on the Sabbath, “so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed” (John 5:10). So rather than celebrate a miracle of God through Jesus, the Jews concerned themselves with a rigidly external morality with only the appearance of holiness. Continue Reading →

Nehemiah 3:1 – The Sheep Gate

Bible Verse of the Day

Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set its doors. They consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Tower of Hananel. Nehemiah 3:1 ESV

In Nehemiah, we find the story of the Israelites rebuilding Jerusalem after returning from their exile in Babylon. The wall around Jerusalem was the first project for the people. That wall was what protected them from their enemies. The first part of the wall that was rebuilt was the Sheep Gate. This might not sound like a priority, but to the people of Israel it was of the utmost importance in their worship of God.   Continue Reading →

Jonah 1:4-5 – Your Sin, Our Trouble

Bible Verse of the Day

But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. (Jonah 1:4-5 ESV)

The Bible is pretty clear that we all sin (Romans 3:23). Though some of these sins could be considered worse than others (1 John 5:16), they each still separate us from God. Some sins are out in the open, while others are hidden for years or even a lifetime. When we are sinning, we can get into the mindset that our sin isn’t hurting anybody else, or that it isn’t a big sin. In fact, Jonah probably wasn’t thinking that running away from God (Jonah 1:3) was going to affect anybody else; boy was he wrong. Continue Reading →
