Sin

Luke 11:4b – The Lord’s Prayer: Lead Us Not Into Temptation

The Lord's Prayer Devotions

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”
(Luke 11:1-4 ESV)

N otice that Jesus’ instruction on prayer does not end with “lead us not into sin” but instead “lead us not into temptation.”  You may wonder, what’s the difference?

Many times we like to approach sin as an imaginary line.  As long as we stay on the right side of the line we’re OK.  But, as soon as we cross to the wrong side of the line we’re sinning.  The result of this mentality is that we often attempt to get as close to this imaginary line as possible without crossing or sinning. Most of us eventually learn that if we keep walking up to the edge of this line, we’ll eventually cross it. Continue Reading →

Luke 11:4a – The Lord’s Prayer: Forgive Our Sins

The Lord's Prayer Devotions

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”
(Luke 11:1-4 ESV)

A s we pray for our needs we can often forget that our greatest need is forgiveness.  God wants us to experience the freedom of forgiveness: the freedom of being forgiven by God and the freedom that comes from extending forgiveness to others.  Scripture is clear that if we confess our sins to God, He will forgive us and cleanse us (1 John 1:9).  Confession literally means to agree with God.   We are agreeing with Him that we’ve sinned greatly against Him.  We are agreeing that Jesus was a sufficient sacrifice for our sins.  We are agreeing that His mercy and grace are much greater than our sins. Mark 11:25 – Make Sure To Forgive Others

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. (Mark 11:25 ESV)

In prayer, many of us tend to simply rattle off a list of things we have done wrong for the day or week, and ask God to forgive us for them. This usually constitutes all the forgiveness we believe is needed during our prayer time. This isn’t necessarily wrong, but as this verse points out, there is something we should be doing before we ask God to forgive us of our multitude of sins. Continue Reading →

Romans 6:6 – Brought to Nothing

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (Romans 6:6 ESV)

Sin seeks to be our master (Genesis 4:7), seeks to rule and dominate us. It grabs hold in our human nature, enslaving us to itself. Every person to walk the earth, save Jesus, is currently a slave or has been a slave to sin. This works itself out in every evil that we see one person commit against another, or even against themselves (1 Corinthians 6:18). But God, in compassion, became a man and lived a perfect life, fulfilling Old Testament law and prophecy (Matthew 5:17) to redeem us from that slavery.

We then come to the historical event Paul wrote of in today’s passage Continue Reading →

2 Chronicles 12:1 – The Superman Complex

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. (2 Chronicles 12:1 ESV)

There are few things better than when life comes together. Your relationships are good, your job is going well, you’re faithfully reading your Bible and the sin you’ve struggled with seems distant. A season such as this could last for a long while, and you’d probably feel pretty good about yourself. Often, we feel so encouraged that even a bump in our spiritual road can’t get us down because we’re grounded in God’s Word. But, we know this will not last forever. Eventually we decline. We read our Bible less, we fall again to the same sin and the small bumps in the road turn into massive potholes. Why? Continue Reading →

Nehemiah 2:17 – Sins Cause Callousness

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” Nehemiah 2:17 ESV

Jerusalem had been destroyed and lying in ruins for over 125 years. The people Nehemiah was talking to here had been living in the rubble heap that was Jerusalem for ten years or more. Why then, was it necessary for him to tell them to look at the “ruins” and start building the wall? It was because the Israelites that were living there had become callous to their surroundings. Day after day they became numb to walking over rubble and not having gates to protect them. Eventually, this literally broken city became comfortable and home to them.

Unfortunately, this same destruction can become comfortable in our lives today. Continue Reading →
