Daily Devotions On The Psalms And Proverbs

Psalm 33:1 – Living As Befits Us

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
(Psalm 33:1 ESV)

If you found yourself at the end of life and were afforded the opportunity to both reflect upon your existence and hear what others had to say about the way you had lived, what would characterize your life? Think for a moment, what would you like others to say of you? What do you hope your life would have been recognized for? Would your friends and neighbors say, “He always seemed to notice what was wrong with everything first, complained, and was overly critical.” Or Continue Reading →

Proverbs 22:24-25 – It’s Not Me, It’s You

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. (Proverbs 22:24-25 ESV)

Most of us are well aware that “bad company corrupts good morals” (I Corinthians 15:33) and we become who we are consistently with. When we come across verses such as these in Scripture, people’s faces flash through our mind’s eye. A name pops into our head, or we recall and replay a situation where we were wronged. However, the person’s face that rarely comes to mind is our own! Are you that man or woman “given to anger”? Continue Reading →

Psalm 8:1- Majestic

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
(Psalm 8:1 ESV)

This psalm was written as a song to be sung by God’s people. Imagine, if you will, living in a day before electricity as those who originally sang this verse did. Picture stretching out underneath a canopy of suspended lights at nighttime. The stars would have been breathtaking, overwhelming your eyes by their sheer number and collective intensity. Most of us rarely have the opportunity to see the “heavens” outside of our modern city lights. Continue Reading →

Psalm 16:11 – Ever Present

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
(Psalm 16:11 ESV)

Have you ever really enjoyed being in the presence of someone?  It might have been a boyfriend or girlfriend.  Maybe someone who always made you laugh, and you probably still look forward to spending time with them.  The Psalmist wrote that in God’s presence there is a fullness of joy for us.  In the Old Testament, God dwelt in the Holy of Holies, and it was where His presence was (Leviticus 16:2).   Once a year, a priest was chosen to enter there. But, we read that after Jesus died on the cross, its separating veil was ripped (Matthew 27:51). Therefore, God no longer dwells there. Continue Reading →

Proverbs 9:8-9 – The Wise Graciously Take Criticism

Daily Bible Verse

Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. (Proverbs 9:8-9 ESV)

Taking criticism can be difficult. Nobody likes to be told what they are doing is wrong, especially when they think they are right. However, a wise person takes criticism graciously. A wise person understands that they don’t know everything. If you’re acquainted with someone who believes they know everything, chances are they aren’t truly as wise as they perceive themselves to be. Continue Reading →

Psalm 46:10 – How To Be Still

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10 ESV)

Two of the most difficult words to hear as a child are “be still.” Everything in us wants to stay in motion physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. These two words can be equally challenging for us as adults- especially in the midst of the seemingly immediate and urgent details of life. These words, “be still,” literally mean to let drop, to release, to relax. You might even be thinking, “How do I do that?”. Even when we put time aside to read our Bible in the morning/evening, we rush through it and check off that activity for the day. Continue Reading →
