Daily Devotions On The Psalms And Proverbs

Psalm 119:19-20 – Letters From Home

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

I am a sojourner on the earth;
hide not your commandments from me!
My soul is consumed with longing
for your rules at all times. (Psalm 119:19-20 ESV)

Law. Commandments. Rules. How many people can you think of that would make a statement like, “My soul is consumed with a longing for your rules at all times”? Probably not many. But often we read our modern context into the Bible instead of reading its context out of it. Presently, our societies’ laws, commandments and rules have been crafted here on earth by human beings. While some of them are rooted in Biblical sentiment, they are still fallible.

Notice, however, the Psalmist’s previous phrase, “I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me!” Now we catch a better glimpse of what was happening. Imagine this: Continue Reading →

Proverbs 3:5 – Self-Sufficient Savior

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5 ESV)

Have you ever been burned by someone you trusted? Maybe it was a close friend you confided in only to discover he or she betrayed your trust. Or worse yet, maybe you trusted your employer, believing they would look upon your many years of service, hard work, and loyalty and keep an open position for you- but they didn’t, and you were laid off along with the rest. It’s so difficult to find people to trust in life because most of us simply look after our own bottom line. Essentially, people look to what is best for them in a given situation. But it has not been, nor ever will be so with our God. Continue Reading →

Psalm 130:7 – Where’s Your Hope?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

O Israel, hope in the LORD!
For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption. (Psalm 130:7 ESV)

What do you place your hope in? It may be as simple as an upcoming vacation or a date next weekend, but chances are, you’re looking forward to something. But often, the things we place our hope in keep us in an endless cycle of disappointment. What we do is create little saviors to rescue us from whatever we think is wrong in our lives when our hope isn’t first and foremost in the Lord.

If we hate being overweight, the next diet is crafted into our mini-hero. It becomes the mechanism through which we hope to be rescued from our current state. Take it a step further, and consider the dollar. How many of us place our hope in little green pieces of paper and silver coins? Or worse yet, numbers on a screen?

When we place our hope in these little saviors, we Continue Reading →

Psalm 119:103 – Feed Me

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalm 119:103 ESV)

Have you ever heard of anyone asking for prayer that they might be able to be a more faithful eater? Chances are, you probably haven’t, and for good reason too: eating is not a difficult activity for most people. In general, eating regularly comes as easy as breathing, especially around a holiday. To be fair though, there is a joy to be had in great food. Genuine pleasure is almost guaranteed when picking tender meat from perfectly glazed ribs, and the satisfaction is heightened when we enjoy these excellent meals with family and friends. The reason we don’t need accountability from our Christian brothers and sisters in regular eating is because we so often derive pleasure from food, in other words, we desire it. Continue Reading →

Proverbs 3:5-8 – Dependence and Victory

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV)

From Jordan:

Dependence and Victory is part five in the series DEPENDENCE, and holds the greatest value when read in sequence. You can start at the beginning here.

As Christians we must realize a simple, yet significant truth: through complete dependence upon Jesus, we do not fight for victory, but from it (1 Corinthians 15:56-58). This is a profound distinction with intensely practical application for every facet of our lives. The unfortunate habit of so many Christians is to view the Biblical narrative as little more than law, filled with lists, rules and principles that must be followed in order for spiritual victory to be achieved. This, however, is not the message of the Gospel.

Look closely at 1 Corinthians 15:56, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.” Sin’s power is in the law, or that which condemns by charging those under it with wrong doing punishable by eternal death (Romans 6:23). But what happened the moment you were saved Continue Reading →

Proverbs 3:5-8 – Dependence and Humility

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV)

From Jordan:

Dependence and Humility is part four in the series DEPENDENCE, and holds the greatest value when read in sequence. You can start at the beginning here.

While recovering from surgery all heroic notions of self-reliance were literally chiseled out of me (yes, a literal hammer and chisel were used on my vertebrae). An event the morning following my procedure was the greatest illustration of dependence and humility I have ever received, and most likely will be for some time. In short, I was unable to use the restroom under my own power, which my mind did not immediately equate to a lesson in humility, but in humiliation.

However, as I lay in my uncomfortable fold-in-ten-different-directions hospital bed, the embarrassing experience was used like a spotlight by the Holy Spirit. It sent a beam of stark, shining light straight at the plank that had lived in my eye for so long: my need to be the hero. By God’s grace that idol is crumbling in my heart, though not yet gone completely. I do believe this pride induced longing to be our own heroes, our own saviors, is implanted in us from an early age, and it is deadly.

It will present itself in various forms: Continue Reading →
