Matthew 5:16 – Good Works

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 ESV)

With almost all things in life, there needs to exist a healthy balance. For instance, you can workout all you want, but if you don’t balance that effort with a healthy diet, it won’t do you much good. You can work all the hours in a day to buy anything you want, but if you don’t balance your work with time off, you can’t enjoy your toys. Churches can fall into this trap too. They might focus on one doctrine and forget to teach the many others that are profitable to a Christian’s walk; this is one of the reasons we have denominations (which aren’t bad).

One such doctrine is that of “good works”. Continue Reading →

Luke 5:1 – Why is the Power Out?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,
(Luke 5:1 ESV)

As the church, we want change, we want justice, we want equality, and all manner of noble things. We want to see more children waking up in a home where their father stuck around. We want to see more mothers full of grace and wisdom, living as the individual God created them to be. We want to see more pastors living uprightly, leading with integrity. In short, we want to see heaven’s power brought to bear upon the earth, and when that happens, we crowd around it.

What were those people flocking to, what were they amazed by? Continue Reading →

Psalm 50:13-15 – The Heart Of Sacrifice

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” (Psalm 50:13-15 ESV)

From Ryan:

We often teach our children at an early age to say, “Thank you”. The notion being that they will continue to voice their gratitude through life whenever they are given gifts or help. But what happens when we find ourselves on the giving end and are not shown that same gratitude? Often, resentment toward the unthankful individual or toward helping others in general begins to form. Though we may not expect anything tangible in return for a service done, it is an unspoken truth that we do expect the helped individual to be thankful and give voice to gratitude. What if we experience these feelings because they are similar to the way our Creator feels? Continue Reading →

Luke 4:42-43 – Bigger is Better, Right?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” (Luke 4:42-43 ESV)

As Jesus preached in Judea’s synagogues, the people were captivated because he taught “as one with authority,” (Mark 1:22) like no one they had ever heard. He would preach to thousands, heal the sick, and engage the destitute. In fact, at one point, his renown had so grown that the people sought to make him king by force (John 6:15). What did Jesus do with this seeming success; Continue Reading →

Galatians 6:9 – Weary of Suffering

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9 ESV)

With the advent of 24/7 news, the internet, facebook and everything else, we are bombarded with most of what goes wrong in the world. A woman is abducted and we learn immediately of sex trafficking. An earthquake devastates a developing nation and we see the hundreds of thousands who have lost loved ones, don’t have clean water and no longer have a home. We can be overwhelmed with all of the hurt in the world– we can be paralyzed by it. How can we make a difference through the pain? Does my $10 donation really do anything? Continue Reading →

2 Corinthians 5:20 – Ambassadors For Christ

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.(2 Corinthians 5:20 ESV)

As His ambassadors, God has entrusted to us His message of reconciliation and God is making His appeal through us. An ambassador does not represent his own interests, but the interests of the ruler he represents. The big question, then, is what are the primary interests of our King? What are His desires, values, and priorities?

Jesus was incredibly clear about His mission: proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and freedom to those who are oppressed (Luke 4:18-19). As we read through the gospels He may restate it somewhat, but Continue Reading →
