Daily Devotions On The Gospel

Luke 10:20 – Rejoicing In Our Salvation

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

“Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20 ESV)

As we reflect upon our lives, we can probably see more times than not we have been blessed by God. Throughout the Psalms, there are praises to God for what he has done for the author. When we meet to pray, we may have a special time for sharing the good things God has done in our lives. These are all good and Biblical. Jesus had sent out seventy-two followers (Luke 10:1) and had told them to go into the harvest (Luke 10:2) and to heal the sick and bring the kingdom of God (Luke 10:9). Of course these things happened as Jesus said they would and the followers got excited like any of us would (Luke 10:17). Continue Reading →

2 Chronicles 7:1 – His Wrath Diverted

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. (2 Chronicles 7:1 ESV)

The Temple, the dwelling place of the Lord, was being consecrated by king Solomon, the wisest man of his day. At the end of his prayer, and in the presence of the people of Israel, fire rushed from heaven engulfing the offering and sacrifices in heavenly flame. This display of power awed every person present and sent them to their faces, bowing before the mighty one of Israel. This scene would echo again, some thousand years later, as Jesus hung on the cross, for “it was the will of the Lord to crush him,” (Isaiah 53:10). Continue Reading →

Luke 14:28 – Count The Cost And Your Blessings

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?(Luke 14:28 ESV)

Living in America can cause a person to get a little too comfortable. Jesus’ words don’t mean as much to an American or any person who has religious freedom as it would those in countries where Christians are being persecuted for their beliefs. How many times have you heard a preacher use this verse when giving the gospel presentation at the end of his message? You probably haven’t. Have you ever used it when telling someone about Jesus? Probably not, because it isn’t a verse often used in the evangelism repertoire. Continue Reading →

Luke 9:23-25 – Radical Jesus: Take Up Your Cross

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
(Luke 9:23-25 ESV)

It’s difficult from our modern perspective to completely understand the discomfort and even offense that the crowds would have felt from Jesus’ words.  In our culture the cross is often relegated to being a good luck charm, a stylish piece of jewelry, a cool tattoo, and at best a symbolic piece of art.  Even in Christian circles we’ve sanitized our perspective of the cross with pictures of a smooth skinned Jesus with a small trickle of blood.

People from 2000 years ago would be shocked at how we utilize the cross. Continue Reading →

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 – Through the Cross

Verse Of The Day

For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. (2 Corinthians 5:14-15 ESV)

Through the cross…

  • Jesus gives Himself as a ransom.
  • Jesus forgives our trespasses.
  • Jesus erases our debt.
  • Jesus liberates us from sin.
  • Jesus frees us from our futile ways.
  • Jesus reconciles us to God.
  • Jesus reconciles enmity between people.
  • Jesus reconciles all things on heaven and earth to Himself.
  • Jesus pays our penalty and removes our guilt.
  • Jesus appeases God’s wrath and justice.
  • Jesus upholds God’s righteousness.
  • Jesus secures our redemption for eternity.
  • Jesus models the ultimate denial of self.
  • Jesus displays God’s power for our salvation.

Luke 4:18-19 – The Mission of the Messiah (III)

Bible Verse of the Day

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
(Luke 4:18-19 ESV)

Who and what are these verses talking about?

Poor = destitute of wealth, power, influence, position, honor; needy and helpless
…someone with absolutely nothing to offer…

Captives = literally being held captive or captured at spear point
…unable to free themselves—escape is not an option… Continue Reading →
