Acts 9:10-11 – Faithful Obedience Amongst Fear

Bible Verse Of The Day

Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” (Acts 9:10-14 ESV)

Have you ever been afraid to do something God is asking you to do? In this scripture, Saul was known for being a man who persecuted and even killed Christians. Ananias was a Christian. And here, God is about to change the heart of Saul, an evil man who hated God. He is about to heal him of his blindness and use him to reach many, many people for the Lord. But first, Ananias must obey God and have faith that God knows what he is doing.

You can imagine the fear Ananias must have felt to obey God and approach Saul. Continue Reading →

Psalm 98:7-9 – Rejoicing in Justice

Bible Verse of the Day

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. Psalm 98:7-9 (ESV)

God is just, and his judgements are pure. The psalmist describes the celebrating of the whole creation when the Lord “comes to judge the earth.” So not only is he just, but a right response to his justice is rejoicing, and to be genuinely glad for it. As God’s people, we should join in the “roar” and praise him because he isn’t corruptible; he cannot be perverted or bought, he has no price. He isn’t like a judge presiding over our human courts, who can be swayed, payed off, or extorted. Our God stands above and apart from creation as ruler and Lord. Continue Reading →

Psalm 102: 25-27 – Everliving

Bible Verse of the Day

Of old you laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you will remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away,
but you are the same, and your years have no end.
(Psalm 102:25-27 ESV)

Think of a mountain. Imagine its high soaring peaks and crags, its deep valleys and dense forests. Imagine its age, with some of its trees being hundreds of years old, not to mention the rock itself. A thing as daunting as a mountain can seem unchangeable, almost permanent. But we know that this isn’t so. Valleys are carved by the flowing of streams and blowing of the wind. The panorama of peaks we enjoy are sculpted slowly, over thousands of years, into their present grandeur. Now, while a thousand years may seem a long time to us, there is one to whom it is just as a day (2 Peter 3:8). Continue Reading →

Exodus 14:15 – Pray Or Press On

Bible Verse of the Day

The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. (Exodus 14:15 ESV)

Moses was leading the people of Israel out of Egypt.  God had just performed mighty works and shown his power on their behalf.  He called Moses to lead these people, the Israelites, but, Pharaoh and his army were pressing down on them, just as God had told Moses they would (Exodus 14:1-4).  At this point, Moses had a choice: move forward or stop and pray. Luke 22:41-44 – “Nevertheless”

Bible Verse of the Day

And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22:41-44 ESV

Jesus had spent the evening with the twelve in what men would eventually label “The Last Supper”. He sat at the table of eleven faithful and one devil, serving them all. Continue Reading →

Matthew 14:30-31 – Walking in Faith

Bible Verse of the Day

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
(Matthew 14:30-31)

We have all dreamt of doing something great for God. These dreams might involve some form of sacrifice or great leap of faith. We see others around us who have sold everything to follow Jesus as a missionary in some far corner of the world and view them as a person of great faith, maybe even aspiring to be like them. Consider this, if we had been sitting in that boat with Peter we would have thought he was brimming with faith as he began to climb out of the boat and walk toward Jesus. But suddenly, something even stranger happened and Peter began to sink. Continue Reading →
