Psalm 139:7-8 – God In The MRI

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! (Psalm 139:7-8 ESV)

From Jordan:

I had always thought that I was fine with being cramped in enclosed spaces, until last summer 2011 when I had my first MRI. That’s when I found out that I was wrong; in fact, not just wrong, but very, very wrong. If you’re unfamiliar with MRI’s, it is a medical imaging procedure in which the patient is inserted into a tube just large enough for his or her body to slide into. Then (don’t lose me in the fancy medical jargon here), there are a bunch of loud hammering noises, clicks, claps, beeps and a variety of other atonal hubbub. To me, the sounds may as well have been children crying and puppies being launched into space.

Initially, the cramped space and the noise didn’t bother me Continue Reading →

Luke 1:13 – Zechariah: A Faith Example

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. (Luke 1:13 ESV)

Zechariah is not a name that is mentioned often when faithful men of the Bible are spoken of. He is only mentioned in the Gospel of Luke because he is the father of the great John the Baptist, the fore runner of the Messiah, Jesus. While there aren’t books written about him or any other mentions in the Bible, he is someone we can look to as an example of faithfulness.

Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old in age and did not have children (Luke 1:7). In that day, being childless usually brought sorrow to the family and shame from those around them (Luke 1:25). Continue Reading →

Galatians 3:2-3 – Remember Your Roots

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? (Galatians 3:2-3 ESV)

Have you ever heard a person described as someone who forgot where they came from or had forgotten their roots? This type of person usually doesn’t give credit to those in their life who aided in getting them to where they presently are. Maybe they came from a small farming town and now live in the big city and don’t want to get their hands dirty. It might be neglecting a friend or mentor who poured into them, and act as if they made it through life alone. This doesn’t just happen outside the church, but inside the church as well. Jeremiah 1:7-8 – Confidence in Our Calling

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 1:7-8 ESV

This was a tall order the Lord was setting before Jeremiah, as he was called to declare the coming of God’s judgement upon the nation of Judah. This would frighten anyone. Jeremiah had never done this before and appears not to have been an eloquent speaker (Jeremiah 1:6). But, God encouragingly assured he would be with him, and that is the most important to any calling, God with you. Continue Reading →

Mark 4:8-9 – The Sower: The Good Stuff

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Mark 4:8-9 ESV)

Good soil, or healthy soil, is the product of many factors coming together in just the right balance. This soil isn’t hardened, leaving the sower’s seeds vulnerable on the surface to be devoured by the birds of the air. This soil isn’t shallow, but has the depth required to weather spells of drought, heat and adversity. This soil isn’t overrun with thorns and weeds because it is cared for and cultivated. This is the good stuff, the stuff only a Master Sower could take credit for. When our hearts are Continue Reading →

Matthew 13:44 – The Cost Of The Kingdom

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44 ESV)

Imagine for a minute that a man in a dark suit steps out of a limousine and tells you that you can have any one thing you want in the world. You want to live somewhere else, it can be done. You want the fastest car on the planet, it can be done. You want to see your favorite sports team win a championship, it can be done. Our minds begin to race as we think of the one thing we want most. Then he says, “But, in order to have this thing, you must Continue Reading →
