Daily Devotions That Are Encouraging

Isaiah 55:9 – Head & Heart

Bible Verse of the Day

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 55:9 ESV)

Our God is eternal, transcendent, infinite, and all manner of awe-inspiring adjectives. But each of these still do us the simple service of describing the many facets of a wonderful fact: God is. He exists and has being in and of himself. He does not depend on anything outside of himself, yet all of creation finds itself completely reliant upon him. This same God, whose thoughts and ways are as far above ours as the “heavens are higher than the earth” (Isaiah 55:9), will never be fully grasped or comprehended by the minds of men. Dr. Elmer Towns succinctly summarized this in commenting that as “sincerely as finite man attempts to understand theology, he encounters the infinity of God- he cannot comprehend every part of its teaching”. This does not mean, however, that he cannot be known. Continue Reading →

Psalm 51:12 – On Fire!

Bible Verse of the Day

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
(Psalm 51:12 ESV)

——————————

Have you ever met someone who had just become a Christian and was “on fire” for God?  Did you say to yourself, “I wish I were still like that?” We don’t intend for it to happen, but after time, that passion or joy often ebbs and other things in life take priority and focus.  Or maybe, you never even had that “fire” because you were saved at an early age and have been a Christian for nearly your entire life.  Whatever the reason is, you’re not alone. Isaiah 30:15 – Taking Time With God

Bible Verse of the Day

For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
“In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
But you were unwilling, (Isaiah 30:15 ESV)

We all live busy, hectic, modern lives. When we work, we work a lot. When we play, we go all out. When we are home, we have kids to take care of or school events to attend. And when it comes to church, we could be at a service or small group every other day if we really wanted. It can be hard to put time aside from our eventful days to rest and be quiet before God as today’s Scripture instructs. And this gets even harder when a monkey wrench is thrown into our busy lives. Ezekiel 7:26 – Invalid Validation

Bible Verse of the Day

Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders. Ezekiel 7:26 (ESV)

A humble man said of leadership, “Never let your public anointing exceed your private devotion.” In other words, leaders ought to walk intimately with Jesus more often when none are watching than when the multitudes are present. This sentiment is not aided by our culture, however, as we live in constant need of the feeling of validation. We walk in a misguided cycle of measuring our spirituality in comparison to one another (2 Corinthians 10:12), instead of measuring ourselves against the “cornerstone” (Acts 4:11). Acts 9:10-11 – Faithful Obedience Amongst Fear

Bible Verse Of The Day

Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” (Acts 9:10-14 ESV)

Have you ever been afraid to do something God is asking you to do? In this scripture, Saul was known for being a man who persecuted and even killed Christians. Ananias was a Christian. And here, God is about to change the heart of Saul, an evil man who hated God. He is about to heal him of his blindness and use him to reach many, many people for the Lord. But first, Ananias must obey God and have faith that God knows what he is doing.

You can imagine the fear Ananias must have felt to obey God and approach Saul. Continue Reading →

Luke 6:47-48 – Weathering The Storms

Bible Verse Of The Day

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
Luke 6:47-48 (ESV)

If you grew up in the church, you probably heard the parable of the man building his house on the rock and the man who built his house on the sand when you were in Sunday school.  We can often focus on the foundation of the man whose house was built on the rock.  He obeys the words of Jesus and his house stays up. But, we tend to ignore that this man does go through the storm. Continue Reading →
