Ecclesiastes 3:11 – Infinite Joy in the Eternal God

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11 ESV)

From Jordan:

When I was young I couldn’t fathom the concept of an exciting heaven. I was told we would worship Jesus forever like the angels. To me that sounded like a horribly boring life. I could not comprehend finding pleasure in worshipping God or praying to Him for an eternity. For me, worship was just old music accompanied by a middle-aged woman pounding on a tambourine; and prayer merely concentrating on trying to concentrate on God, and always failing. But there comes a time for all of us to grow up and come to terms with the message of eternity. For God “has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Our chief end is to glorify God, and we should enjoy that. In fact, we have a mistaken view Continue Reading →

Psalm 139:7-8 – God In The MRI

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! (Psalm 139:7-8 ESV)

From Jordan:

I had always thought that I was fine with being cramped in enclosed spaces, until last summer 2011 when I had my first MRI. That’s when I found out that I was wrong; in fact, not just wrong, but very, very wrong. If you’re unfamiliar with MRI’s, it is a medical imaging procedure in which the patient is inserted into a tube just large enough for his or her body to slide into. Then (don’t lose me in the fancy medical jargon here), there are a bunch of loud hammering noises, clicks, claps, beeps and a variety of other atonal hubbub. To me, the sounds may as well have been children crying and puppies being launched into space.

Initially, the cramped space and the noise didn’t bother me Continue Reading →

Luke 1:13 – Zechariah: A Faith Example

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. (Luke 1:13 ESV)

Zechariah is not a name that is mentioned often when faithful men of the Bible are spoken of. He is only mentioned in the Gospel of Luke because he is the father of the great John the Baptist, the fore runner of the Messiah, Jesus. While there aren’t books written about him or any other mentions in the Bible, he is someone we can look to as an example of faithfulness.

Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old in age and did not have children (Luke 1:7). In that day, being childless usually brought sorrow to the family and shame from those around them (Luke 1:25). Continue Reading →

2 Timothy 3:16 – God Speaks Still

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16 ESV)

Have you ever felt like God has quit speaking? Maybe sermons are losing their impact, times of genuine worship in life are growing more scarce, and overall, you’re coasting on spiritual memories and past times? Whatever the reason, there are times in life in which we feel disconnected from God and alone.

But have you considered that Book you’ve been neglecting? Continue Reading →

Galatians 6:9 – Weary of Suffering

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9 ESV)

With the advent of 24/7 news, the internet, facebook and everything else, we are bombarded with most of what goes wrong in the world. A woman is abducted and we learn immediately of sex trafficking. An earthquake devastates a developing nation and we see the hundreds of thousands who have lost loved ones, don’t have clean water and no longer have a home. We can be overwhelmed with all of the hurt in the world– we can be paralyzed by it. How can we make a difference through the pain? Does my $10 donation really do anything? Continue Reading →

Romans 6:6 – Brought to Nothing

Daily Bible Devotional Verse

We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (Romans 6:6 ESV)

Sin seeks to be our master (Genesis 4:7), seeks to rule and dominate us. It grabs hold in our human nature, enslaving us to itself. Every person to walk the earth, save Jesus, is currently a slave or has been a slave to sin. This works itself out in every evil that we see one person commit against another, or even against themselves (1 Corinthians 6:18). But God, in compassion, became a man and lived a perfect life, fulfilling Old Testament law and prophecy (Matthew 5:17) to redeem us from that slavery.

We then come to the historical event Paul wrote of in today’s passage Continue Reading →
