2 Chronicles 7:2 – God’s Glory Manifest

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And the priests could not enter the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s house. (2 Chronicles 7:2 ESV)

The weight of God’s glory was so tangible there wasn’t even room for the priests to stand within the Temple. It was God residing in his house for his glory and the people’s good.  When we step back into our place below his throne, our eyes are opened and we see the King of kings reigning, and our response is to declare that “he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever” (2 Chronicles 7:3). This God who makes himself known from the beginning is revealing himself still, and we may now belong to his kingdom through the resurrected savior, Jesus Christ, his son. Continue Reading →

John 13:34-35 – A New Command

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 ESV)

Jesus spoke these words after he had finished washing the disciples’ feet. Firstly, he made it quite clear that our loving one another was not a suggestion, but a “new commandment” to men from God. This love we are to have for one another is not optional, but a required mark of the Christian. Secondly, this love is to be of the same quality as Christ’s. He implied that we would judge the quality of our love by his, “just as I have loved you”. This sentiment should be deeply rooted in every Christian then: I don’t judge my spirituality by comparing myself with others, but with Christ. When we do this there is only one possible response, repentance and humility. Continue Reading →

Psalm 50:9-10 – God Doesn’t Need Your Sacrifice

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

I will not accept a bull from your house
 or goats from your folds.
For every beast of the forest is mine,
the cattle on a thousand hills. (Psalm 50:9-10 ESV)

We have a problem here. God is telling the Israelites he won’t accept their sacrifices. First of all, he owns the things they are trying to sacrifice to him. This can be a problem. Usually when we sacrifice, we are giving up something of our own and going without it. But, it isn’t much of a sacrifice when you never really owned it in the first place. The Israelites had continued to sacrifice to God even though they weren’t really following him. It almost became a tool to make God do what they wanted him to do. Continue Reading →

Luke 6:6-7 – Ugly Religion

Bible Verse of the Day

On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.
(Luke 6:6-7 ESV)

It was the Sabbath, a day to be kept holy (Exodus 20:8), and the people had gathered faithfully, sitting around a pulpit where they would be lead in prayer, in reading, and the teaching of Scripture. Here, Jesus was standing in the midst of such an assembly not simply teaching the Bible but living its truth, shining its light. That Sabbath day, there was a man with a deformed or withered hand. Jesus would go on to heal the man’s hand, literally healing his body on a day intended for bodily rest and man’s good (Mark 2:27). The Lord had compassion on that man, had mercy on him and lovingly healed him. Continue Reading →

Romans 2:13 – Amen Isn’t the Password

Bible Verse of the Day

For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.  (Romans 2:13 ESV)

Hearing and agreeing with Biblical truth has become an evangelical hobby. This is a dangerous place to live. When “truth” and “being right” become a hobby a natural pride will begin, much like a weed, to sprout, grow, and multiply around our skill at each of these. The pride one feels in being good at something, that certain satisfaction that comes along with doing something well, will crop up in our spirituality. But this pride becomes more insidious because of its context: its exclusivity. Jesus Christ is indeed “the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), the only path to the Father. But tragically, this beautiful truth can be used perversely in our minds! Continue Reading →

Mark 7:6-8 – To Tradition Or Not To Tradition

Bible Verse Of The Day:

And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
(Mark 7:6-8 ESV)

Traditions can be good things. They can often remind us of where we came from or help us to focus on Jesus. Unfortunately, they can cause trouble. Churches have split because one group won’t let go of a tradition, while the other sees no need for it. Why does this happen? It happens when we hold a tradition as a commandment from God. The Pharisees looked at Jesus as a bad person because he was breaking their traditions. Continue Reading →
