Luke 5:1 – Why is the Power Out?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,
(Luke 5:1 ESV)

A s the church, we want change, we want justice, we want equality, and all manner of noble things. We want to see more children waking up in a home where their father stuck around. We want to see more mothers full of grace and wisdom, living as the individual God created them to be. We want to see more pastors living uprightly, leading with integrity. In short, we want to see heaven’s power brought to bear upon the earth, and when that happens, we crowd around it.

What were those people flocking to, what were they amazed by? Continue Reading →

Psalm 50:13-15 – The Heart Of Sacrifice

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” (Psalm 50:13-15 ESV)

From Ryan:

We often teach our children at an early age to say, “Thank you”. The notion being that they will continue to voice their gratitude through life whenever they are given gifts or help. But what happens when we find ourselves on the giving end and are not shown that same gratitude? Often, resentment toward the unthankful individual or toward helping others in general begins to form. Though we may not expect anything tangible in return for a service done, it is an unspoken truth that we do expect the helped individual to be thankful and give voice to gratitude. What if we experience these feelings because they are similar to the way our Creator feels? Continue Reading →

1 Timothy 2:7 – The Christian Consumer

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. (2 Timothy 2:7 ESV)

Our lives today have become pretty easy. We don’t know what it means to wait for something anymore. If you want food, simply go to a fast food joint. If you want a new record, click a link on your computer instead of waiting in line at a record store. If you want to know what a friend is doing, text them instead of calling or check out their facebook/twitter page. We have became a people who consume food, entertainment, news, and so on.

Unfortunately we have brought this into the church as well. Continue Reading →

Luke 4:42-43 – Bigger is Better, Right?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” (Luke 4:42-43 ESV)

As Jesus preached in Judea’s synagogues, the people were captivated because he taught “as one with authority,” (Mark 1:22) like no one they had ever heard. He would preach to thousands, heal the sick, and engage the destitute. In fact, at one point, his renown had so grown that the people sought to make him king by force (John 6:15). What did Jesus do with this seeming success; Continue Reading →

Mark 1:16-18 – Called In Community

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
(Mark 1:16-18 ESV)

The modern media’s portrayal of the “lone wolf” seems to be growing more and more popular. From movies where the hero is mowing down hundreds of bad guys by himself, to books about “maverick” politicians standing against the grain and defying the status quo, it would seem as if we love a stand alone hero. But how realistic a notion is this one man versus the world mentality? And have we tried to adopt this model into our spiritual walk?

Even a cursory examination of Jesus’ first interactions with his disciples should be sufficient for the realization that we were never intended to go it alone. In fact, if we take it way back, Continue Reading →

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – The Comforted Comfort

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV)

You can always count on a church or christian organization to arrive on the scene when there has been a natural disaster of some sort. Hurricane Katrina was a great example of this. Churches continued helping in New Orleans by cleaning and rebuilding years after the storm struck. Why does the church live this way? Why do Christians spend their money and time to help others in trouble? There are many reasons for this, but a great component is the comfort we receive from our Father in heaven when we are in need of it. A person who has truly experienced the grace of God in these events simply cannot stand back and watch others suffer. Especially after they have experienced the comfort and peace that comes from none but the Almighty God (Philippians 4:7). Continue Reading →
