Exodus 14:15 – Pray Or Press On

Bible Verse of the Day

The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. (Exodus 14:15 ESV)

Moses was leading the people of Israel out of Egypt.  God had just performed mighty works and shown his power on their behalf.  He called Moses to lead these people, the Israelites, but, Pharaoh and his army were pressing down on them, just as God had told Moses they would (Exodus 14:1-4).  At this point, Moses had a choice: move forward or stop and pray. Luke 22:41-44 – “Nevertheless”

Bible Verse of the Day

And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22:41-44 ESV

Jesus had spent the evening with the twelve in what men would eventually label “The Last Supper”. He sat at the table of eleven faithful and one devil, serving them all. Continue Reading →

Ephesians 2:8-10 – The Grace of God

Bible Verse of the Day

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV

Grace, an unmerited favor, an undeserved love, and an apt description of God’s interaction with mankind. This is astounding when we properly understand even a little of who is dealing graciously with us. In our day, many of us operate spiritually out of a sense of entitlement or selfishness. We automatically see situations in light of a “what’s in it for me?” mentality. In so thinking, we presume upon God’s grace, and easily forget our true sinfulness and guilt (Romans 2:4). This presumption assumes that God in fact owes us something. Continue Reading →

Luke 6:47-48 – Weathering The Storms

Bible Verse Of The Day

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
Luke 6:47-48 (ESV)

If you grew up in the church, you probably heard the parable of the man building his house on the rock and the man who built his house on the sand when you were in Sunday school.  We can often focus on the foundation of the man whose house was built on the rock.  He obeys the words of Jesus and his house stays up. But, we tend to ignore that this man does go through the storm. Continue Reading →

Matthew 21:42 – Spiritual Arsenal

Bible Verse of the Day

“Have you never read in the Scriptures…” Matthew 21:42

In the New Testament, people would often come to Jesus with spiritual questions, and in fact, the Pharisees would even try to challenge Jesus on his teachings. For example, some of these questions and challenges can be found here: Matthew 21:14-16; Mark 2:23-28; Luke 18:18-20. Many times Jesus would respond to these people by reciting Scripture or saying something like, “Have you never read in the Scriptures?”. Continue Reading →

2 Timothy 3:16 – Taking Form

Bible Verse of the Day

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
(2 Timothy 3:16 ESV)

Notice the phrase breathed out? Some translations render it given by inspiration, but these phrases come from the Greek word theopneustos, which is the combination of theos, meaning God, and pneuma, coming from the root pneu, which describes a dynamic movement of air. There are instances where it can be translated to breathe or emit a fragrance as well. So in this simple phrase, breathed out, there is a depth we don’t often perceive. This word theopneustos then is really the picture of God breathing or emitting His own substance into something. Continue Reading →
