Daily Devotions About The Bible

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 – Men’s Words vs God’s Power

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:4-5 ESV)

The word evangelism can frighten many, Christian and non-Christian alike. When some Christians hear this word, they immediately think of the litany of verses to memorize, the catchy acrostics, or maybe the many rebuttals needed for their apologetic repertoire. These connotations tend to frighten us because we believe that the words we use are what brings the person to a saving knowledge of the Lord. In essence, the power is in the words, that is, the “right” words. If we say the wrong thing or mix up the order a person could wind up in Hell because of us! Is this really what evangelism is all about? Continue Reading →

Mark 4:5-6 – The Sower: Quick to Hear, Fast to Forget

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. (Mark 4:5-6 ESV)

Fast forward, if you will, to Mark’s sixth chapter. Beginning in verse fourteen, we read the account of King Herod seeking to answer an intriguing question of the day, “Who is this Jesus of Nazareth?” After some speculation, we reach verse twenty, which interestingly reports that upon hearing John the Baptist, “he heard him gladly” (Mark 6:20). We know also from Jesus’ very own words about people like Herod that for awhile they were willing to rejoice in the light, in the truth that John the Baptist brought (John 5:35). Yet these people, who were so quick to rejoice and accept the truth, were not a new phenomena. Remember those to whom Ezekiel sang “with a beautiful voice” (Ezekiel 33:32), but still would not live according to the truth? Or those hypocrites who delighted to know God’s ways yet did not live according to them (Isaiah 58:2)?

All of these were the hearts, quick to hear and fast to forget, of shallow soil. In these hearts, the word Continue Reading →

1 Corinthians 10:6 – Examples

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. (1 Corinthians 10:6 ESV)

As we read the Bible, we can often imagine it as a far off place and culture that has nothing to do with us. We might imagine the people in the Bible having no idea of the struggles or sins we deal with today. The Bible might be used just as a tool to encourage and inspire you instead of bringing you to repentance.  We can miss so much in our walk with Jesus by just focusing on the righteousness instead of realizing the sinfulness that is also represented in the Bible.

Our minds can take us to places we would otherwise be unable to physically go. Here, Paul is describing one of the benefits our intellect affords us. Continue Reading →

Isaiah 44:19 – Blind, Deaf, and Dumb

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, “Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?” (Isaiah 44:19 ESV)

The absurdity of idolatry is made plain from God’s vantage point. Our foolishness in believing that somehow one side of a log could be holy and the other side common is staggering! Idols, though they may not hold the same form, often find their way into our homes and fit easily and comfortably into every culture before and since Isaiah’s. An inspired Psalmist wisely observed:

Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see. Continue Reading →

Isaiah 55:9 – Head & Heart

Bible Verse of the Day

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 55:9 ESV)

Our God is eternal, transcendent, infinite, and all manner of awe-inspiring adjectives. But each of these still do us the simple service of describing the many facets of a wonderful fact: God is. He exists and has being in and of himself. He does not depend on anything outside of himself, yet all of creation finds itself completely reliant upon him. This same God, whose thoughts and ways are as far above ours as the “heavens are higher than the earth” (Isaiah 55:9), will never be fully grasped or comprehended by the minds of men. Dr. Elmer Towns succinctly summarized this in commenting that as “sincerely as finite man attempts to understand theology, he encounters the infinity of God- he cannot comprehend every part of its teaching”. This does not mean, however, that he cannot be known. Continue Reading →

I Samuel 3:4 – “Here I Am!”

Bible Verse of the Day

Then the LORD called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!”
(1 Samuel 3:4 ESV)

——————————

Sometimes we forget just how big God is. In fact, we even forget the truth that God is unfathomably big. We are short sighted and self-absorbed so often that we neglect a relationship with a God so amazing. Have you ever felt the Holy Spirit tugging at your heart? Have you ever felt the nudging and leading of his hand? That voice that whispers, “Come be with me. Open my word, internalize its truth, I will transform you.” And then rolled over and went back to sleep? Or decided to keep watching your favorite TV show instead? If so, then think on this simple analogy: Continue Reading →
