Daily Devotions About The Bible

Psalm 119:19-20 – Letters From Home

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

I am a sojourner on the earth;
hide not your commandments from me!
My soul is consumed with longing
for your rules at all times. (Psalm 119:19-20 ESV)

Law. Commandments. Rules. How many people can you think of that would make a statement like, “My soul is consumed with a longing for your rules at all times”? Probably not many. But often we read our modern context into the Bible instead of reading its context out of it. Presently, our societies’ laws, commandments and rules have been crafted here on earth by human beings. While some of them are rooted in Biblical sentiment, they are still fallible.

Notice, however, the Psalmist’s previous phrase, “I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me!” Now we catch a better glimpse of what was happening. Imagine this: Continue Reading →

Psalm 119:24 – Ancient Counselors

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Your testimonies are my delight;
they are my counselors. (Psalm 119:24 ESV)

The Bible isn’t simply a thick rule book God threw down from atop Mount Sinai. Rather, it’s a collection of testimonies, or the story of God coming through for his people. Though Scripture does contain lists like the Ten Commandments and books like Leviticus, it is primarily comprised of the stories of God’s people. In short, the Bible is a book about God written by him through people. The very way that he chose to reveal himself to us displays that he wants to be in relationship with us. And, like the Psalmist, those testimonies should be our delight!

We should delight in them because: Continue Reading →

Ezra 7:10 – Teach

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. (Ezra 7:10 ESV)

This is the fourth and final part in the series “study. do. teach.”, which examines Ezra 7:10 as a model for Christian living. You can start from the beginning here.

From Ryan:

In this series we’ve considered Ezra 7:10 as a model for Christian living in: studying God’s word, living it out and now finally, teaching it. The previous three devotions were probably easy to follow and agree with. Studying Scripture and applying it to your life is a given in most Christian circles. But what about teaching the Bible? You may be thinking that you’ve never been to Bible college and that your calling isn’t to stand in the pulpit and preach. What would this have to do with you? But actually, it has a lot to do with every believer!

We seem to have bought into the notion that teaching from a stage or lecturing in a classroom are the only ways we can teach people. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time remembering what my last instructor taught me in a classroom setting. But, as the parent of a little boy I do know that Continue Reading →

Ezra 7:10 – Study

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. (Ezra 7:10 ESV)

This is the second part in the series “study. do. teach.”, which examines Ezra 7:10 as a model for Christian living. You can start from the beginning here.

From Jordan:

The question for me has never been “Why study the Bible?”, but “How do I study the Bible?” There are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of books written on this subject of studying The Book, and many of them are tremendously helpful. It has been a perpetual quest of mine to find the perfect method of Bible study. So much so that at one point I even had a color-coded highlighting system (I literally used pink for the Holy Spirit)! Though I was taking the Bible very seriously I was approaching it from a misguided understanding of what it was that I was actually studying.

You see, I viewed Scripture as if it was in an academic vacuum or laboratory and myself as a research scientist tasked with dissecting its words with my Greek and Hebrew scalpels. This is what happens when we Continue Reading →

Ezra 7:10 – A Model for Christian Living

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. (Ezra 7:10 ESV)

From Jordan:

Study. Do. Teach. This was the verse God used to set the direction for my life a few short years ago. I sat on the banks of the Missouri river reading my Bible and begging to hear from God. It was a warm summer day and I sat in the sandy shallows with my feet in the water as I read my favorite books in the world, Ezra and Nehemiah. But it wasn’t until chapter seven, verse ten that those words had life and fire breathed into them. I am convinced, however, that while God spoke to me in a singular way that morning, those words penned so long ago put forth a universal model for Christian living.

There exists a natural flow in a believer’s life from salvation. When God saves us we are Continue Reading →

John 17:17 – Truth

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17 ESV)

Have you ever heard someone say, “That may be true for you, but not for me”? The idea that truth is relative to every individual and culture is nothing new. In fact, it’s been around a long time. In ancient Greece there was a group called the Stoics teaching exactly that. But what is interesting about the philosophy of relative truth is that there’s never been a person in history who could live by it!

Think about it: if someone walked in front of a moving bus there’s a good chance it would be the end of him, whether the individual believed in physics or not. The laws of gravity, thermodynamics and mathematics were true in ancient Greece just as they are today. A thing’s trueness or falsehood isn’t dependent on a person to believe in it, it exists in reality independent of that person’s belief. Continue Reading →
